CommCore’s 6 Tips for Your Next Zoom or Virtual Presentation

As the world continues to reopen, according to a recent survey of executives reveals, many are still hesitant about returning back to the workplace. This means that mastering the skills on how to present virtually, via Zoom or other video conferencing platform, will remain a daily part of our workday.

Whether you are preparing for a virtual webinar, moderating an event, a Zoom meeting with colleagues, or client pitch, CommCore suggests these proven tips:

1. Backgrounds: Real vs. Virtual

  • Tidiness and neatness
  • Be aware of personal items
  • Background detail is good
  • Virtual backgrounds can degrade camera quality for Zoom and other platforms

2. Lighting: Amount of light angles

  • Sources (natural vs. artificial, LED/incandescent)
  • Watch out for bright backgrounds like open windows
  • Soft lighting placed in front of face / camera / screen looks best on Zoom

3. Leveling and Framing:

  • Camera should be at eye level
  • Sit close enough for viewers to see just your head and shoulders
  • Use a stand desk if it’s more comfortable

4. Sound:

  • Test your Zoom audio with a colleague before audience arrives
  • Familiarize yourself with “mute/unmute”
  • Headset/Earbuds can greatly improve the sound quality
  • Don’t ignore disruptions. Acknowledging an interrupting child, airplane flying overhead or lawnmower in the background can help build rapport.
  • It’s easy to accidentally talk over / interrupt people on Zoom. Speak slowly and make sure colleagues / clients / direct reports have finished their thoughts before speaking.

5. Gesturing and Eye Contact:

  • Gesture as you would in-person
  • Avoid the chair swivel
  • Speak directly into the camera

6. Open and Close Strong:

  • Open:
  • Pause briefly (beginning and end)
  • Engage the audience quickly
  • Choreograph in advance
  • Close:
  • Summarize
  • Be aware of any additional agenda items
