As public relations crisis management continues to take center stage in our post-pandemic world, CommCore Consulting Sr. Vice President, Dale Weiss spoke at the HACR – Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility alongside CommCore’s Vice President Amy Doman.  The session, titled Leading Through Uncertainty, was presented as part of HACR’s all-live 2021 Executive Programs on June 16, 2021.

How you communicate and act during tumultuous times defines your reputation as a leader. Executives have the unique responsibility of making sense of uncertainty for their employees, and Weiss’s session taught attendees how to accomplish just that, even without having all the answers. He shared best practices for crisis navigation, and relatable ways to make the next best decision using the information and resources executives have available to them.

As a leading crisis communications firm, for 35 years CommCore has helped organizations be ready  — prepared prior to a crisis — and working side-by-side both during and after a communications crisis. In the session, Weiss described the different types of crises, provided case studies, and offered ways to best be prepared for the inevitable challenge that an organization will face.

Drawing on firsthand assistance and consultation for reputation management post-crisis for:

  • Tylenol
  • SARS risk communications
  • Columbia and Challenger space shuttle accidents
  • Congressional investigations
  • Plant closings
  • Class action litigation
  • Product recalls
  • Ethics issues, and
  • “#MeToo,”

Weiss dug deep into the realities of crisis, the evolving role of social media, and the different approaches that can be made through PR strategies to restore organizational reputation.

The bottom line? In today’s fast-paced environment, public relations crisis isn’t a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. The difference between organizations who thrive versus those who merely survive a crisis is whether or not the PR crisis is successfully planned for ahead of time, and effectively managed once it hits. Weiss engaged with the audience through a lively discussion of polling questions, and examples from today’s evolving world. The session concluded as he touched on the comprehensive planning process that any organization, large or small, can take in the face of crisis.
