Radio 89.3 KPCC out of Southern California featured CommCore CEO Andrew Gilman as a guest expert on crisis communications planning and response in a recent interview on Uber’s recent data breach. Listen to the full interview here.
The breach itself didn’t include credit card or trip information. But Uber admits it paid the hackers to stay quiet about the hack, and to delete the information.
According to Gilman, “it’s all about trust. As a rider, I know I have alternatives. I might go with someone else who does a better job of protecting my data.” So covering up the breach actually made Uber’s situation worse, not better.
“There are only two kinds of businesses in the world: those have been hacked and know it; and those who have been hacked and don’t know it.
These stories will eventually go public. You’re better off being in control of it rather than waiting until later when it gets worse or trying to cover it up.”
CommCore trains your team to create a response that is fast, flexible, and factual. “Companies can get stalled or bogged down on how to release a simple statement. By that time, things can get so far ahead of you that it’s impossible to catch up,” CommCore SVP Dale Weiss told NPR in an interview last month.
Speed is key when dealing with these emergency communications. CommCore crisis communications trainings enable your team to understand the process better, so you can respond more quickly. Read about when CommCore “Pressure Tested” the New York Times here.
