The recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade is a polarizing topic that not only affects women’s reproductive health rights, but also how organizations communicate with their workforce about updates and changes to healthcare plans and overall work culture.
Many organizations were proactive as they were able to prepare statements, messages and coordinate with their health care benefits carriers ahead of the decision, due to a leaked initial draft majority of the decision. Organizations like Amazon, Apple Inc., The Walt Disney Company and many others released statements and internal memos detailing how they plan to support their employees and clarifying vital information included in their benefits.
The SCOTUS decision left many organizations and its workforce wondering not only what it meant for their healthcare benefits – but also, how to best lead and communicate this matter to their workforce through this major change.
At CommCore, we teach our clients that great leaders not only communicate and deliver messages, but also listen to the needs of their employees, outside counsel and have some idea of how social issues today can have an impact at their organization.
During times of uncertainty and evolving changes, we recommend:
- Check against your current health care benefits.
- Create an alternative line of communication where employees can submit questions, concerns, or comments, while upholding privacy and anonymity.
- Ensure employees that you are aware of current events and provide updates as needed, after consulting with C-Suite, legal and other business units as needed.
- Above all, guarantee your employees that their health and well-being is a priority.
